Sometimes, ticking all the boxes of family friendly, luxurious and centrally located, can be difficult, yet the discovery of the Albany Hotel on Edinburgh’s Albany Street, did just that.
The unique and inspiring boutique hotel in the Georgian New Town was something of a revelation; consisting of four listed townhouses, exuding period charm and character; and within a stone’s throw of the heart of the city; truly a gem of a find.
Unlike most establishments of comparable size, The Albany has a small, informal reception area and although no less welcoming or efficient, it belies the expanse of rooms; public and private; which lie beyond within a labyrinth of typical townhouse, levels.
Authentic architectural history is reflected in its re-invention as a hotel, where the rooms and layout are dictated by The Albany’s listed building status; adding to and not deflecting from the charm and beauty of the building.
Bedrooms are indulgent, luxurious and quirky; each different from the other and all embracing the established shape and design of a fondly remembered era in the city’s history.
I particularly enjoyed the furnishings in The Albany; deep colours, wonderfully crafted furniture, individual accessories and hand painted wallpaper, offering a reflection of a time in history and reminiscent of the glorious house, it once was.
Eating within the hotel offers a contemporary menu and a choice of selected wines and cocktails, served impeccably with the option of enjoying the hotel’s terrace area, overlooking the vast New Town.
The Albany’s team are worth an individual mention; friendly, informed and very well versed on places to suit every taste, within wonderful Edinburgh.
