Edinburgh Castle may seem a slightly strange choice as regards an addition to my blog, due to the fact that I have lived in Scotland all of my life and have had the pleasure of visiting the Castle on numerous occasions, however, I do believe that living literally on the doorstep of such history and natural beauty, which Scotland affords us in abundance, allows us to take for granted those places, monuments and national treasures which, geographically less fortunate people, must travel great distances to visit.
Edinburgh Castle surely is one of the most stunning, atmospheric, imposing and distinguished buildings in Scotland, yet, thousands of locals pass it by each day, hardly noticing it; knowing it will always be there – like an old friend. This truly magnificent edifice has witnessed much of Scotland’s turbulent history, yet stands strong on an extinct volcano, guarding the city and her people like a majestic patriarch, forming a familiar piece of the city’s skyline.
Sitting proudly at the head of the Royal Mile, no-one can fail to be awestruck by the breathtaking views across the city and as far as Fife from the spacious Castle esplanade, indeed, for most, much time is spent here both at the start and end of a visit, camera in hand to record the fabulous panorama.
The Castle has such an expansive story to tell; I would challenge anyone, young or old, to fail to be impressed by the history lesson it provides and the true insight into Scotland’s traditions and culture, the many artifacts offer.
Through the course of a visit, which could quite easily consume the entire day with lunch (picnic in our case), coffee and ice-cream stops, do not be surprised by the rollercoaster ride of emotion the Castle’s story will undoubtedly take you on; never have I felt more proud or patriotic than within its walls and learning that OUR Edinburgh Castle has truly earned its title of ‘Defender of the Nation’.
