An old Edinburgh favourite; previously The Patio, in the city’s New Town; has been relocated by the Stornaiuolo family to Morningside, under the name “Nonna’s Kitchen”.
A welcoming sight on the Morningside landscape, Nonna’s Kitchen; a superb, long established Italian restaurant; was buzzing and full up on a dreich Edinburgh Tuesday, mid-winter.
Our party of five was greeted like long lost family, shown our seats within the moderately sized, welcoming restaurant and presented with a prosecco to enjoy whilst perusing the menu and wine list.
With the strapline, “Fresh Italian Food, Served with Love”, Nonna’s fulfills its promise to a “T”; the spirited family matriarch recited an extensive list of specials, without benefit of notes, going into impressive detail and obviously passionate about the food emerging from her kitchen. Everything, quite literally, is possible: starters, mains; interchangeable and sized to order, with helpful recommendations and suggestions, helping my indecisiveness.
There is a strong focus on fresh seafood and shellfish, mixing well with traditional Italian favourites, flavoured to personal taste and delivered with enthusiasm and vigour.
Nonna’s Kitchen is so well worth the journey out of town; guests cannot fail to be warmed by the exceptional hosting skills and soul affirming food; arriving a customer, departing a family member, sure to return to Nonna’s table again soon.
