A stone’s throw from the ‘Heart of Midlothian’ on the city’s Royal Mile; the ancient site of public hangings and administrative centre of old; and indicative of the historical importance of the area, our home for the night, in complete contrast was a luxurious penthouse apartment.
The Edinburgh Address is fast becoming synonymous with luxury in the city as the business manages some fabulously located city apartments and offers a service to match.
The Penthouse on The Royal Mile is as indulgent as it sounds and with views up and down the ancient street, which runs between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace, the location, in the heart of the Old Town, is none too bad either. In fact, as the balcony, which is splendidly placed to the rear of the building demonstrates, the property is bang in the middle of town with panoramic views over Edinburgh’s rooftop landscape.
A wrought iron gate; so fitting for many of the alleyways, which meander away from the cobbles of The Royal Mile; offers access to the lift area which ascends to The Penthouse. As the bustle of the street below, subsides, the door opens on a pleasantly bright and expansive space; expertly furnished and displaying items from a bygone age within artwork, interesting books and mementos gathered.
Respectfully admiring the surroundings, it is easy to assume the role of custodian for a night, as valuable artifacts are trustingly placed around the beautiful property.
Superbly equipped and with such luxurious surroundings, it would be most appealing to stay put and not venture out to the street below, especially with little additional touches such as very welcoming and pretty fresh cut flowers, placed in vases in many of the rooms. But venture out we must, as one of the benefits of staying so centrally is the superb access to all of the city’s delights.
In addition to the attractions of the Old Town, literally on the doorstep, where days could be idled away, within museums, old houses, castles, cosy cafes and local pubs, the New Town is only a short walk away and the delights (for some) of quaintly unique shops and High Street chains alike, cinema and joys of the theatre.
A mixed trip for us of theatre and museum visits, meals out and a Jazz event, didn’t require one taxi as even the short walk from the train station was an interesting one, up winding alleys and ancient steps, flanked by unusual shops and enticing ale houses!
The Penthouse on The Royal Mile is a luxurious joy and one where the stay should be more lengthy, allowing the opportunity to enjoy the heart of the house as well as the delights of wonderful Edinburgh.
